THIS IS ALSO WHAT IS UP

THURSDAY, JANUARY 22
AT HIGHLINE
210 BROADWAY E

CULT OF YOUTH (NYC)
"Sean Ragon has been active in the DIY punk, industrial and experimental music communities on the east coast for over 15 years while also running a record store and label in Brooklyn (Heaven Street and Blind Prophet Records, respectively). He has been recording under the moniker of Cult of Youth for the last five years. Cult of Youth eventually expanded into a four piece, which landed them on tours with Zola Jesus, Cold Cave and Iceage. They caused quite a stir; not only among more indie-centric press outlets such as Pitchfork and Stereogum, but with underground publications such as Heathen Harvest and Special Interests magazine as well.

For their third full-length for Sacred Bones, Cult of Youth have delved deeper into their style of punk-influenced psychedelic neofolk and created a self- described “post-industrial Pet Sounds.” Using acoustic and electronic instruments, found sounds and an extensive tribal rhythm section, Cult of Youth have put it all out on the table and left us with their magnum opus.

The band has returned with a renewed sense of enthusiasm and an all-new lineup. Sean Ragon, once the project’s lone member, is now flanked by Jasper McGandy on bass and Christian Kount on electric guitar (both of whom were members of seminal Sacred Bones band The Hunt). Cory Flannigan on drums and Paige Flash on cello complete the five-piece. The end result is Cult of Youth as they were always meant to sound.

The contributions of the new members are evident on every track on Final Days, from the anthemic “Empty Faction” to the gorgeous album closer “Roses.” Final Days is the culmination of everything Cult of Youth has been moving towards the past seven years — post-industrial, post-punk, and post-enlightenment.

Addendum: Real human bones were used on this recording and a portion of the lyrics were written in jail."

HIVE MIND (LA)
isolated industrial misery to drown out the outside world and revel in personal blight

HAUNTED HORSES
- Haunted Horses are an industrial-punk trio hailing from Seattle, WA. Their sound has been described as bizarre and experimental, utilizing wall of noise techniques and thunderous drums galloping through dark tones. Seattle's The Stranger describes the band as "a furious onslaught of sound rarely found these days, at times channeling prime-era Liars in their cacophonies of claustrophobic angst." In the spring of 2015, the band will record their next full-length LP with producer Bill Rieflin (Ministry, Swans, King Crimson).

DOUBLE GIGGIN 2 ELECTRIC BOOGALOO

SONIC AVENUES (Montreal, QC)
"Having delivered the quintessential powerpop/punk album in 2012's Dirtnap released burner Television Youth, Montreal's Sonic Avenues take it to another level on their third LP Mistakes. Building on their signature melodic style, the Aves return with an evolved and considerably more varied effort that resulted from dropping all preconceived notions of how a "punk" record should sound. The band made a concerted effort to not repeat itself, and it shows. While no doubt teeming with energy and hooks, Mistakes eases off the light speed tempos of previous releases and shows greater sophistication in both songwriting and production. Self-produced by the band in singer Max's apartment, Mistakes was written and recorded and mixed in less than a year. Mixing together songs dark, bright, short, and long, this release really finds the band coming into its own and claiming a distinct niche within the contemporary pop/punk pantheon. Fans of previous Sonic Avenues efforts will discover treats both familiar ("Waiting For A Change") and completely unexpected ("Better Days To Come") on this album - by far the band's best to date."

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24
AT VICTORY LOUNGE

OUTER SPACES (Baltimore, MD)
"Cara Beth Satalino doesn’t seem to like sitting still. “I could light everything on fire. I’ve got a matchbook of burning desires,” she proclaims on “Do I Sound Like Myself Now,” a track off her recently released Creature of Nature EP.
It’s true.
Satalino moved to Athens, Georgia in 2008 after graduating from SUNY-Purchase, ready to make music. She record and released The Good Ones EP, a collection of promising folk songs, under her own name in that same year. Soon after, Satalino formed Witches, a fantastic punk trio which put out two 7”s and a fantastic full-length record, Forever, via Salinas Records and Bakery Outlet Records, respectively; and consistently toured in the United States and in Europe. The band established Satalino as gifted vocalist, an exciting songwriter and an absolutely shredding guitarist.
In the early months of 2012, Satalino started Outer Spaces to explore, as the name subtly implies, the components of song that were left aside by Witches’ meat-and-potatoes arrangements. The Creature of Nature EP is a perfect example of this, as it sees Satalino reimagining a handful of snarling and straightforward punk standouts from Forever as dynamic folk songs living somewhere betweenYou Are Free and Harvest. But this isn’t to say that she has gone soft. The tenacity of her early recordings still rings clear. What’s more, this approach finds Satalino’s knife sharper than before."

DASWASUP TONIGHT - SCREAMING FEMALES & PUJOL BRING A LOT OF ROKK CAN ROLLS!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15
AT BLACK LODGE

SCREAMING FEMALES
"Screaming Females' seven years as a band, four full-length albums and 700 globe-spanning live shows has made them difficult to miss. Through it all, the New Brunswick, New Jersey trio have continued to exude a frenetic energy which is built upon the zeitgeist of America's punk and indie underground yet has always remained forward-looking. Fittingly, for Screaming Females' 5th album 'Ugly', the band enlisted legendary recording engineer Steve Albini, famed for his unique ability to capture the ferociousness of a live performance while delivering gorgeous sonic clarity. The album's 14 tracks reaffirm the touchstones of the band; they can still shred and front-woman Marissa Paternoster can still unleash a powerful howl. But it doesn't end there. The album ushers in new explorations for the band, a truly remarkable feat considering their already prolific output. 'Ugly' has the perfect combination of raw energy and honed musicianship that produces the type of rock & roll which is still a force to be reckoned with."

PUJOL (Nashville, TN)
"In February of 2013, Daniel Pujol set out to write and record the follow-up to his debut album, 2012’s UNITED STATES OF BEING. Pujol and producer Doni Shroader set up shop in Mt. Juliet, TN at The Place: a suicide-prevention center for teens located in a strip mall. They used largely borrowed and donated gear, recording every day from 5pm until 6am, all the while breaking down and setting up the temporary studio every day between office hours. Mixing took place during the building of Battletapes, a two car garage that was in the midst of being converted into an acoustically treated, professional grade tracking room; building permit, construction workers, and all. Following four months of vampiric living and working around conflicting schedules/eccentricities (the band, the engineers, the sun), Daniel, Doni, and Battletapes had finished the album they had been working towards. Recording and mixing happened in a “non-location” where things were being built or set up, in order to work on the album, working around the obstacles the location presented."
