WAX IDOLS TONIGHT @ HIGHLINE

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21
AT HIGHLINE
210 BROADWAY E

WAX IDOLS
You could say that a lot has happened since the release of Wax Idols’ critically well-received 2013 album, Discipline + Desire, and if you’re steeped in the shorthand of music criticism go-to narratives, it would be dangerously easy to get reductive about what happened next: The band’s singer-songwriter, Hether Fortune, supported the album as best she could, spent some time in 2014 as a touring player in White Lung, went through a heartbreaking divorce, and then sat down to make American Tragic – the band’s long-awaited third album and first for Collect Records. But that’s not exactly how it went.

“Divorce is a part of this record, yes, but this is not an entirely sad album,” Fortune explains. “The whole spectrum of grief is represented here — shock, pain, anger, loneliness, and then finding a way to work through all of that and not only survive, but thrive. That’s what I was going through. I was trying to save myself.”

Indeed, this is not only a deeply personal record, but a chiefly independent one: As a songwriter and true multi-instrumentalist, Fortune wrote and recorded everything but the drums on American Tragic — a feat only bolstered by the album’s compelling performances and meticulous execution, but a little known fact nonetheless. Co-produced by Fortune and Monte Vallier (Weekend, Mark Eitzel, The Soft Moon, Vaniish), the only other player on this record is drummer Rachel Travers. But it’s also a meditation on an idea that Fortune has been playing with over the entire arc of Wax Idols’ discography, and that is the notion that personhood is neither fixed nor consistent: We can be independent and attached, in need of discipline and desire, or even fully autonomous with a little bit of help. As Fortune points out here, even America, for all its symbolism and mythic value, also rests in tragedy.

SALAD BOYS (Trouble In Mind Records from NZ), PROM QUEEN, EPHRATA + RED RIBBON THIS FRIDAY AT HIGHLINE

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16
AT HIGHLINE
210 BROADWAY E

SALAD BOYZ (Christchurch, NZ)
Salad Boys came together at the end of 2012 with members from other illustrious Christchurch groups T54, Bang! Bang! Eche! and the Dance Asthmatics. Recorded, the Salad Boys are deceivingly charming, presenting a careful but curious balance of well-informed pop melodies, hypnotizing rhythms and heady instrumentation. The group’s self-titled mini-album released in 2013 caused something of a mini-sensation, receiving praise from the likes of Stolen Girlfriends Club, Mess and Noise,hhhhappy.com and many more. In real life, the Salad Boys perform a wondrous assault: a charged up blitz of clanging guitars, intoxicating drones, head-down acid repetition and an abundance of dazzling pop hooks. This notoriety has scored the group a wealth of engagements up and down New Zealand including slots at the Camp a Low Hum and Chronophonium festivals, gigs with Sebadoh, The Bats, & Parquet Courts as well as a highly honorable spot performing as backing band for David Kilgour of legendary NZ group The Clean. 2015 finds the band prepping their proper full-length debut "Metalmania" out in September on Chicago label, Trouble In Mind Records.

PROM QUEEN

EPHRATA
Sometimes swirly, sometimes peppy, always dreamy. Ephrata was formed in 2011 when Seattle musician Brady Hall met Skadi von Reis and they collaborated on some recordings. Jules Jones and Ben Bromage joined in to form the full band in 2012 and they played their first show in early 2013. They focus on sugary cascades of vocal harmony, lush soundscapes of shoegazey guitar, and sixties "wall of sound" power mixed with dream pop and psychedelia. In addition to playing around the Seattle area they also record their own music, make their own videos and take their own photos.

RADIOACTIVITY, LOW CULTURE, VAPID, BAD FUTURE & TERMAN SHANKS TONIGHT

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8
AT BLACK LODGE & VICTORY LOUNGE

RADIOACTIVITY
Seems pretty safe to assume that almost no one doubted Radioactivity's ability to follow up their 2013 Dirtnap debut with something equally stunning. Frontman and chief songwriter Jeff Burke (The Marked Men, The Reds, The Potential Johns) has certainly done more than enough to earn that kind of expectation and pressure. But Silent Kill, which finds Burke backed by Marked Men compatriot Mark Ryan and two-thirds of Bad Sports (Daniel Fried and Gregory Rutherford), does more than merely match the virtues of its self-titled predecessor. Radioactivity's first LP was rightly hailed as a sort of sequel to The Marked Men's remarkable run through the first decade of the millennium, and while Silent Kill bears the unmistakable hallmarks of that band's tightly wound "Denton sound," Radioactivity can now lay claim to a sonic territory of their very own. Burke's distinctive hooks dig as deep as ever, but the scope of his vision has expanded, and now that the Burke/Ryan/Fried/Rutherford all-star team has had some time to cohere, Radioactivity can do all sorts of damage in less than thirty minutes. Although the twelve songs on Silent Kill abide one strict rule--providing garage punk pleasure at all costs--Radioactivity bend that mandate in myriad ways. Breathless ragers like "Battered" and "No Alarm" are as fleet and raw as anything in the combined canon of Radioactivity's members, while mid-tempo heartbreakers "Way Out," "Connection" and "Where I Come From" find Burke and company opening up their sound to let in a little tenderness. And then there are songs like "Not Here" or "With You," which enact perfect unions of melody and kinetic energy. Admirers of Burke's legacy will be not only satisfied, but pleasantly surprised.

HOMESHAKING IN SHEER AGONY ALL NIGHT, MISTER

THURSDAY, AUGUST 20
AT VICTORY LOUNGE
433 EASTLAKE AVE E

HOMESHAKE (Montreal)
Homeshake is the pseudonym and solo project of Edmonton-born, Montreal-based musician Peter Sagar. As follow up to his 2014 debut In the Shower, Homeshake will release his sophomore effort Midnight Snack this coming fall with Sinderlyn.

Midnight Snack was recorded this past winter with Jackson MacIntosh at the Drones club in Montreal. Musically this time around Sagar trades in his guitar for synthesizers and a drum machine, developing vocal arrangements from loops he created for solo set. He pulled influence from house pioneers like Chip E and Mr. Fingers as well as Japanese pop starlets like Chiemi Manabe, slowing down the tempo with his own homemade drowsiness. The resulting collection is an eclectic tangle of personal anecdotes steeped in an everlasting reverence of D’Angelo and R Kelly.

Much of the record was written following Sagar’s dizzying time on the road as touring guitarist with Mac Demarco, reflecting on the loneliness the plagued him towards the end of his run and the longing for life back home in Montreal. Sagar left the band to focus on his own music and to rebuild the infrastructure of his life. While many of the new tracks meander through anxiety and melancholy it is also a witness to a return to safety.

There is a reoccurring theme for Sagar of pulling inward throughout the record. He casts a wide net and fills it with a multitude of musical influences and international tour dates then slows it down a few tempos and builds something humble around it. Throughout the record he peppers in a deep appreciation for the meals prepared by his girlfriend Salina and the simple pleasure of a midnight snack before curling up in bed next to the person you love.

SHEER AGONY (Montreal)
Sheer Agony started in the winter of 2010 as a recording project between the guitar-playing half of Play Guitar, Jackson MacIntosh and Christian Simmons. The two had been working on building an analog recording studio for the better part of a year, and after acquiring a 1” tape machine from a guy in rural Quebec and the spring reverb unit from the studio The Sonics recorded in, they started recording some of MacIntosh’s songs, which tend towards eccentric guitar pop in the vein of the Soft Boys, the dB’s, Sell Out-era Who, Todd Rundgren, and the Homosexuals.

LVL UPSET

WEDNESDAY, JULY 29
AT BLACK LODGE

LVL UP (NYC)
In October of 2011, 20 year old students Mike Caridi (guitar) and Dave Benton (guitar) formed both LVL UP and a young independent record label called Double Double Whammy in Purchase, NY. Originally a bedroom recording project of Mike and Dave, LVL UP quickly grew into a five-piece rock and roll band with the addition Nick Corbo (bass), Greg Rutkin (drums), and Ben Smith (guitar). The five saw the cassette release of their first full length, “Space Brothers” October of 2011, on Benton and Caridi’s new label Double Double Whammy, and on vinyl early in 2012 on Philadelphia label, Evil Weevil Records. While the band laid low for most of 2012 playing only a handful of shows, the album drew modest attention and garnered a small cult following in the Northeast and New England.

LVL UP parted ways with Ben Smith in 2012 as he continued his educational endeavors elsewhere. At the end of the year, the band entered the studio to record a new batch of songs titled “Extra Worlds”, which was released on 7" via Double Double Whammy. 2013 was a big year for LVL UP, playing almost 100 shows in the year, completing several US tours, and following up “Extra Worlds” with a split 7" alongside NYC band, Porches. The band started 2014 on a high note, touring first with Pity Sex (Run For Cover) and then Saintseneca (ANTI), all while managing the DDW record label from the road, as they prepared for the release of the Frankie Cosmos “Zentropy” LP.

Almost three years after the release of their first full length, “Space Brothers”, LVL UP entered the studio several times attempting to complete their sophomore album, “Hoodwink’d”. Completed in June 2014, “Hoodwink’d” showcases the evolution of style by the three primary songwriters, Benton, Caridi, and Corbo since the release of their first LP. Drawing influences from 90’s indie rock, 80’s new wave and 70’s power pop, the young boys have created an album that is stylistically diverse yet cohesive. “Hoodwink’d” will be released on Exploding in Sound and Double Double Whammy on September 23, 2014.

LVL UP has toured with bands such as Pile, Saintseneca, Big Ups, Ovlov & Little Big League, and shared the stage with bands such as Real Estate, Beach Fossils, Speedy Ortiz, Diarrhea Planet, Hop Along, Bomb the Music Industry, Into It Over It, Japanther and Joyce Manor.

SPOCK PARTY FUCKS YOUR BLOCK PARTY RIGHT IN IT'S USELESS FACE

I'm gonna say this here, where hardly anyone ever looks, cuz I gotta get something off my chest but I don't wanna make a big stink about it.

I FUCKING HATE CAPITOL HILL BLOCK PARTY

...and if I ever find that genie at the bottom of my tequila bottle I'm gonna wish the entire CHBP out of existence. The entire thing is disgusting and wrong. I'm not into pushing my opinions on people but I literally BEG YOU to think about it. Why would someone hate Block Party? Seriously, think about it. I'm gonna gonna tell you why. You figure it out on your own, dummy.

DASWASUPGIG is giving you THREE alternatives to big money corporate bullshit music fests this summer. I'm promoting this Spock Party along with my friends in several heavy bands as well as bringing you the Narwhal/Unicorn Cock Block Party which is all culminating into ROACHELLA. Pay attention. THE GOOCH PALMS PLAY AUSTRALIAN R'N'R

SATURDAY, JUNE 27
AT VICTORY LOUNGE
433 EASTLAKE AVE E

THE GOOCH PALMS (Australia)
Once upon a time in a land far away a Frankenstein’s monster of a baby was created. Equal parts GG Allin, Iggy Pop, Roy Orbison and Olivia Newton John (circa Let’s Get Physical era); this baby was an unusual child that would be raised all the way across the oceans in the suburbs of Newcastle, Australia by two very normal parents. Their normality however, could not stifle the ever-growing demon inside the boy that at age 14 would be unleashed on an unsuspecting Novocastrian audience. This boy is Leroy Macqueen; singer, guitarist and one half of notorious garage-punk duo The Gooch Palms. His partner in this story is Kat Friend, a fellow Novo that as a young girl, always dreamed of meeting her demented prince charming and starting a band with him. And sometimes, dreams really do come true. Not so long ago she picked up a couple of drum sticks, got herself two drums and has not looked back since. In the very short while it has taken Kat to become a bona fide shit-pop goddess, she has also become an absolute pro at providing the much needed yin to Leroy’s schizophrenic yang, keeping it cool as a cucumber while oozing her very own brand of badass-femme-sass. Together these two are an unstoppable force that have been turning heads and boners everywhere they go. They play catchy-as-hell pop music for the underdogs of this world, singing songs about bogan life in a small industrial town on an isolated continent in a far away hemisphere. Not to mention a lot of songs about outer-space. The Gooch Palms debut album Novo’s delves into the reality of what life in Newcastle is like for these two misfits and the good, the bad and the boredom that comes with it. Released through Anti Fade Records Novo’s quickly sold out of the first pressing with pressing number two available RIGHT NOW! For almost 4 years Australia’s favourite punk sweethearts have been melting faces with their high energy, take no prisoners, balls out, drool-inducing live shows. They make a lot of noise for a minimal two piece but what they lack in instrumentation they make up for in stage presence and songs that you’ll be humming, whether you want to or not, for days, months or maybe even years after the show is over. During their existence they have shared the stage with some amazing international acts such as Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Thee Oh Sees, 5,6,7,8’s, Nobunny, Hunx & His Punx, Shannon & The Clams, The King Khan & BBQ Show, Tyvek plus many more and have played some of Australia’s biggest festivals including Big Day Out, Groovin’ The Moo, Sydney Festival and Mona Foma to name only a few. But after getting itchy feet in Australia, the pair decided to expand their horizons and crossed the big ol’ Pacific to bring unsuspecting audiences in the USA the salty sweet taste of the gooch. They picked up a rental car which was kindly upgraded, practiced driving on the opposite side of the road and embarked on an extensive nation-wide tour of America ending at the legendary Gonerfest in Memphis, where Leroy expertly demonstrated his down-under snake handling and bushman climbing skills. These guys aren’t done with America just yet though, in fact the love affair has only just begun. The Gooch Palms are set to release a new 7” single through Detroit label Urinal Cake Records within the coming months and will be back in early 2015 for round two! So keep your eyes, ears and foreskins peeled for The Gooch Palms, their coming for ya!

CATCH FRED THOMAS OF SATURDAY LOOKS GOOD TO ME TONIGHT AT THE VIC

THURSDAY, JUNE 25
AT VICTORY LOUNGE
433 EASTLAKE AVE E

FRED THOMAS
Fred Thomas is a Michigan-born songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who's been at it forever. Starting out as a teenager in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti noise scene in the early 90's, the guy just kinda started jamming and never stopped. Dedicating the past two decades to various projects, Fred's output has always been wildly varied and constantly changing. Best known for work as a "brainchild" sort of bandleader with the experimental pop sounds of Saturday Looks Good To Me, Thomas has also made significant noise and traveled the world on a seemingly endless string of tours with the washed-out physche of City Center, reverby surf punkers Swimsuit and the internal gentle pop duo MIghty Clouds with former SLGTM singer Betty Barnes. Compulsively playing in bands, running small-scale labels and doing shows on a non-stop basis would make a comprehensive list of related projects a little exhausting, but it's safe to say there's always gonna be something homespun, beautiful and a little weird if Fred is involved.

EIGHT BELLS
Eight Bells features within its ranks SubArachnoid Space's Melynda Jackson, joined on bass and drums by Haley Westeiner, and Christopher VanHuffel. A native of rural Texas now based in Portland, Oregon, Jackson’s EIGHT BELLS continues in SAS’ tradition of heavy guitar exploration, adding a blackened dissonance to the mix and minimalist vocals. Jackson is accompanied SAS drummer Christopher VanHuffel and by classically trained six-string bassist Haley Westeiner who created the centerpiece vocals on “Fate and Technology” and also provides harmonic counterpoint to Jackson’s newly discovered vocalizations. With this power trio, Jackson has found a group that brings focus and support to her unapologetically expressionistic experimental metal music.

X SUNS
If you're a fan of dark, winding instrumentals, do yourself a favor and put X Suns on your "to listen" list. The Seattle trio sit somewhere in the middle of the brutal intensity of Russian Circles and the firework-filled wall of sound of Explosions in the Sky. It's like shoegaze with a backbone. Start with the 11-minute "Pillars for Palaces." Lay back, close your eyes, allow it to envelop you and carry you away to sea. - The Stranger

WREKMEISTER HARMONIES
J.R. Robinson perceives life as a long, gradual process of decay. Lightness fades into darkness, while innocence succumbs to the evils of modern society. His music reflects not only this worldview but his emotional response to it. Then It All Came Down, his second long-form composition as Wrekmeister Harmonies, is an exploration of that existential deterioration and an attempt at attaining a deeper understanding of its process. Wrekmeister Harmonies’ pastoral doom has earned praise from Pitchfork, SPIN, Decibel, and Invisible Oranges as a new form of metal composition and performance involving a wide variety of instrumentation. Employing anenormous ensemble of some of Chicago’s best talents in the metal and experimental communities, including Sanford Parker (Corrections House, Twilight), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza), Ryley Walker, Chris Brokaw (Codeine, Come), members of Indian and Leviathan and more, Robinson has created a work that is equally gorgeous and menacing. Few artists have perfected the nuances of beauty as well as annihilation, and Robinson’s mastery of both sides of the spectrum makes his an unique voice in the field of doom.

Then It All Came Down opens with a low, soft drone, creeping in almost imperceptibly. Bells chime as more tonal voices emerge from the ether, Walker’s acoustic guitar echoing in the abyssal soundscape. Several women sing as sirens: “Beautiful Sun.” The piece is inspired by and takes its name from an essay written by Truman Capote following his interview with Manson-associate Bobby Beausoleil (which translates as “beautiful sun”), whose dangerous spirit and embodiment of occult ideals offer an extreme example of the light into dark transition the piece explores. As the soft drones and angelic voices are replaced with threatening rumbles of distortion and low cackles courtesy of Wrest, an overwhelming sense of unease permeates the piece’s atmosphere, only a harbinger of what is to come. When the piece does explode into crushing howls and heavy doom, all semblance of tranquility and stillness, the light, the peace, is exterminated.

Then It All Came Down was debuted at the Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago under a full moon in July of 2013, the first in a continuing yearly series called Beyond The Gate. The series continued in 2014 with a debut of another new Wrekmeister composition which will be released in early 2015. Wrekmeister Harmonies will continue to bring large-scale productions involving a rotating cast guest musicians to unconventional performance spaces throughout 2014-15, and has a future collaboration planned with The Body. An essay by Robinson about Beausoleil’s influence on Charles Manson and his ideological lineage from Alastair Crowley is available for deeper insights into Robinson’s fascination with the controversial cult figure.

BELL WITCH
Seattle funeral/death doom duo BELL WITCH (comprised only of bass, drums, and vocals) made a massive impact in the doom metal scene with their debut album “Longing” (which followed their cult demo that had already generated buzz for the band) which was hailed as one of 2012’s best doom metal releases, even though it was released late in the year, in Nov of said year. With the momentum for the band carrying on, the duo would tour extensively (in North America and Europe) in support of “Longing”, continuing to build more awareness in the scene.

Their anticipated new album, “Four Phantoms” (which was recorded and engineered by the legendary and respected Billy Anderson; Agalloch, Pallbearer, Leviathan, Neurosis, Red House Painters etc.) is BELL WITCH’s most crushing and most moving work yet. With a more honed focus on song structure and more intricate composition, all while taking their sound even further in the soul crushing heaviness realm, “Four Phantoms” (which once again features a guest lead vocal appearance by Aerial Ruin sole mastermind Erik Moggridge on the “Somniloquy” track) is a doom metal triumph for the ages, an album that will go down as one of doom metal’s most triumphant moments of the year with a milestone that no other band in the genre can parallel.

LOS CRIPIS (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Los Cripis started as a home project between Josi and Nicolás when they met in the summer of 2009 and began to spend every hot afternoon playing with 2 guitars (plugged into the same amplifier). It was so fun that they decided to start a band. That summer they put together their first songs and lyirics and thought about incorporating a drummer. Even though they couldn't find one, they decided to start recording all the same. There was a very small room at Nicolás’s and after taking what they had to it (a portaestudio, one computer, a microphone, an amp, guitars, a fan and a cassette player), they decided to name it "Momia Studio". In 2010 and 2011 they moved in together and recorded many songs, which reflect the spirit of the first rehearsals: simple, raw and fun. One day they went to a rehearsal space and recorded the sounds of a drum, which they then used to complete most of the songs, and so by the end of 2011 they had finished Our First Album and FAT (which despite the name came before OFA). Then they made the first copies on cassette and a website for downloading the albums with their past projects and friends. In this way Fariscal Records was born. One stage had finished and they really wanted to play live shows. This time they would find a drummer yes or yes. After a few weeks, they met Marta and from the first practice the three knew they had to keep playing together, so the search was over. And so a new phase of getting "out of the house" and playing live shows started. At the second concert they played in an old video store in Boedo and among the public was Bruno, an unknown fella at the time who invited them to play at the 1234 Shoreditch Festival in London, where he worked. From that point they started to build their 2012 European tour where they met new friends and recorded (in London) the songs that would be part of their third album out in early 2013. The sound of Los Cripis is simple and primitive, no pedals or effects, but full of saturation, melodies, freshness, d.i.y. spirit and color. First takes predominate in the recordings, perhaps reminding us of The Shaggss or Beat Happening.
