SUNDAY DOUBLE GIGGIN

SUNDAY, MARCH 29
AT NARWHAL (basement of Unicorn)
1118 E PIKE ST

LOW CULTURE
Scrappy, melodic garagepunk from Las Cruces, NM. Members of The Marked Men and Shang-A-Lang. In late 2011, when it was clear that Shang-A-Lang was coming to an end, Chris asked Sam and Cade (of Total Jock) if they wanted to start a new band. Low Culture practiced a few times as a three-piece, but a few weeks later Joe (Marked Men/Shang-A-Lang) moved back to Las Cruces and joined the band. Low Culture’s first show was in early November 2011 was at Shang-A-Lang’s last show and the band's been moving full steam ahead ever since. With a few short regional trips and a tour of the Northeast and Canada with Iron Chic in support of their debut 7" under their belt, they're showing no signs of slowing down. A European tour is in the works for March of 2013 as well as many US dates as their work schedules will allow. Low Culture plays catchy garage punk that while not far removed from some of the member's previous project, Shang-A-Lang, has a lot less emphasis on riffs and blown out recordings, and more emphasis on melody and crisp (while not necessarily “over-produced”) recordings. Produced by Mark Ryan (Marked Men/Mind Spiders) in Fort Worth, mastered by Dave Williams (Crusades, Steve Adamyk Band) in Ottawa. This is their debut LP, with the promise of more to come. On Dirtnap Records.

FUTURE DEATH (Austin, TX)
"Future Death make real-deal noise-punk for anyone who misses the Aughties heyday of bands like Lightning Bolt and Hella. Their debut album, Special Victim, was recorded in four days and released on Bloodmoss, the indie responsible for buzzy garage-muckers Slavve. They've got all the gnarl and snarl you'd expect, but drummer Alton Jenkins ratchets up the intensity with progpunk bashing that evolved from teenage fandom of King Crimson and Mars Volta." - Rolling Stone

BOYFRNDZ (Austin, TX)
"Boyfrndz keeps a tentacle in many bodies of water, from tidal post-rock and crushing typhoons of doom metal to the boiling pools of psychedelia and urgent river currents of Trail of Dead's prog-punk. Breeder, second full-length by the Austin foursome, takes a gallon from each and pours it over the amps all at once. Guitars rise and fall, dragging melodies up from the depths and sending them soaring off into space, while drums crash like a thunderstorm, then pull back into a gentle wind blowing through the fields. Meanwhile, Scott Martin's keening tenor swoops through what little empty space manifests between slabs of swollen riffery. Prolific producer Erik Wofford reigns in the chaos of "Burn Through It," "Dark Braining," and the massive "Make Believe." Like a gelatinous mass of shape-shifting translucence, Breeder doesn't play back so much as flow." - Austin Chronicle

IT'S FRIDAY NIGHT. DASWASUP.

FRIDAY, MARCH 27
AT VICTORY LOUNGE
433 EASTLAKE AVE E

JAMES THE FANG & SERIOUS SAM BARRET
Last summer the UK was treated to a Skate Folk tour consisting of Serious Sam Barrett, the Pine Hill Haints and legendary skate rock pioneer Tim Kerr (of Big Boys fame). The shows were highlights of a fairly washed out slog of a summer. Skating in the day, then cracking a can and on to the show felt like the dream as it’s meant to be lived. Despite a slimmed down trip this time round – with no Tim and only Jamie from the Haints – the couple of weeks it hit the UK was still a whirlwind blast of skating, boozing and good tunes as their sound was bolstered by various crew members in different cities. The tour was in support of new record The North Country Steed, which sees the two put down 13 songs which pay homage to country, folk and rock n roll with a bite gained from identities forged in punk rock. Love, cowboys, skateboarding, whiskey and jailhouses are all fair game for subject matter and the record draws the listener in from the opening title track, with Jamie alternating vocals and fiddle over a mesmerising guitar lick.

‘RWTB’ is the natural sequel to Sam’s ‘Hennessey Nights’, perfectly encapsulating most given weekends in Leeds, while ‘I’m in so much Trouble’ is vintage rock n roll done acoustic replete with Ramones-esque harmonies. The album also includes ‘Silver Dagger’, released as a free mp3 last year with the Serious Sam Barrett/Pine Hill Haints split, and the first studio recording of ‘Mole in the Ground’, long a part of Sam’s live set and here complimented by some impassioned fiddle playing here. Closing proceedings is a cover of Dubliners’ song ‘The Nightingale’, the two taking on the monumental task of covering Luke Kelly in his prime and coming through with a touching version that does the folk legend justice.

Both these guys have been relentlessly touring, sleeping on floors and putting out music for years now and their mutual shows have already demonstrated how their styles complement each other, but it’s awesome to finally hear that put down in the studio. With the two taking turns at vocal duties over for the most part just a guitar and fiddle, the sound has a sharpness and clearness that isn’t always associated with strictly DIY operations but definitely shines through here.

As I have mentioned the record covers various themes, but at its core it is a dedication to music itself; playing, listening and generally immersing yourself in what you love. Stick it on the turntable, crack a can, make a brew or head out and slappy grind the curb on your back street; it’s bound to fuel the hype.

GREAT SPIDERS
Great Spiders is the name of a musical project with material created solely by Omar Schambacher. Started in 2005, the name was taken from the book "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds." 'Great Spiders' originally refers to a medieval poison. Great Spiders is self-described as pop music, where no particular era or genre are exclusively inspirational. Melody, chordal flow, harmony, and production are what's most important to Omar. "Lyrics are important, but are secondary to the sound" he says. Currently there is only one official Great Spiders release, 'The Blues are Dead' E.P. circa 2008. A follow-up record is nearing

NOISE-A-TRON
"Noise-A-Tron’s music is both parts heavy and atmospheric noise. It’s a sonic assault that’s melodic, moody, menacing, and equally overwhelming. Even with the lack of a vocalist it never loses any of its edge, and it never gets stale. The band’s debut self-titled EP, released in August of 2010, is a perfect example of the genres finest attributes. It showcases all of the bands ability to churn out abrasive riffs layered with noise and sampling, without being redundant. The band never holds on to an idea for too long, so it never wears out its welcome. Live the band is able to perfectly replicate those layers of sound. Watching the band is also an experience. Jason is a heavy hitter on the drums. He keeps things tight and solid, while Lea goes back and forth from her 8-string bass to her keyboards and mixer, constructing all the riffs and filling in all the blanks. Everything falls perfectly into place." - James Ballinger
